Internship or industrial training refers to employment which is
related to student’s major or field of study (Wikipedia). The objective of this
practical training is to expose the students with the real working environment
before they graduated from the universities or colleges. Some of the courses
required the students to do their internship while some are not. Usually, an
organization will accept final year diploma or degree students as their
practical trainee. But it is subject to change by the higher management in that
organization.
The reasons why some universities obligate their students to
complete their internship before graduate is due to the students’ attitude
itself. Some of them are passive, shy and only feel comfort when they are in
their own ‘zone’. Universities or colleges are the right place to gain valuable
experiences while we still studying. Grab the chance. Be active. This is the
place where we could build up your leadership skill, interpersonal skill,
communication skill and other skills besides performing well in your
studies. No matter what post that you are holding, never forget that your study
is your priority.
For training program, some of the organizations require the
trainee to undergo a maximum of 24 weeks (6 months) of practical training. And
some only have to complete 12 weeks of training. They are organizations that
require their trainee to undergo the minimum training program of 5 weeks and it
depends on which organization you work for.
The trainee may be trained in such area related to his or her studies.
For example, for those who are currently pursuing in Business Administration,
he or she may be trained to do marketing, accounting, finance or general
management. The organization is welcome to assign the trainee specific
projects. It is some kind of early exposure to the job specialization.

P/S: This is my own view of practical training program. I'm doing
my own research about this. I wish I could write more. Currently, I’m looking
for practical training opportunity in any organization related to my area.
